This clever dental devise would have been especially important to the original donor who we understand was a dentist! Designed to be operated by the foot, a treadle allowed the dentist to adjust the position and height of the dental chair. It gives more precise control over the chair's movements while performing dental procedures. It helped to keep patients a little more comfortable during procedures.
These drills were first made in 1890 and used by the Army – including during the Boer War. Ours was made by Ash, Claudius Sons & Co. Limited and used at Whitby Hospital during the pre-Second World War years of the 20th century. If it’s the sort of object that makes you say oooh instead of aaah, it might make the perfect object for adoption!
