Time to tip our hats to Mary Jane Parker, whose elegant Victorian fob watch was donated to the museum by her grandson. Crafted from 18-carat gold, we like to think its intricate engravings and floral design on the reverse speak of a story of timeless elegance.
Mary’s father was the publican at the George and Dragon pub in Kirkbymoorside and by the time of the 1891 census, we know Mary was a barmaid, though there the trail ends. We suspect that this fabulous lady's fob watch must have been her constant companion during some lively gatherings at the George and Dragon!
We believe this special timepiece was made in Kirkbymoorside in the 19th century, in the hands of William Duggleby, a local watchmaker and engraver. And let's not forget its journey through time when it got a little tune-up in the swinging '60s before making its way to Ryedale Folk Museum in 2012.
