High-up, on a shelf, in the corner of Pickard’s Cottage parlour at the Museum, you can see this beautiful clock. It was given to Mr Rimer on his departure from Rosedale Abbey Primary School, where he had been the schoolmaster from 1885 to 1897. A commemorative plate on the base of the clock reads “Presented to James W Rimer by his friends as a mark of their respect and esteem on his leaving Rosedale, 26th March 1897”.
The clock, which chimes, when working, was made by The Lenzkirch Clock Factory in Germany’s Black Forest region. This maker was one of Germany’s finest and the high quality of their pieces, along with their richly decorated clock cases made them an expensive clock to buy. Mr Rimer had clearly made his impression on the people of Rosedale to be given such a special clock.
