Step into the breezy, horse-riding world of the late 19th century with a paper fan that must have been quite the height of ‘cool’.
This novelty cardboard fan was a proud possession of one Mrs Simpson from Kirkbymoorside, who was born in 1859. We think the fan likely dates from the 1880s, possibly from Germany. Considering its age and fragile materials, it’s in rather fan-tastic condition, with only one head and one foot missing.
Irresistible to any lover of horses, the ten mounted figures alternate between male and female, and are lightly embossed, the height of fin-de-siècle riding glamour. Could this fan-cy piece of fashion be cantering into your affections?
