Ah, the skirt lifter – the name might raise a few eyebrows today, but in the 19th century, it was a nifty accessory for navigating less-than-pristine streets. To keep their dresses clean, ladies attached this handy device to their garments. When the need arose to gracefully ‘lift’ the skirt and avoid unsavoury obstacles, they simply pulled a cord connected to the skirt lifter.
