For many years, the saddler’s workshop would have been a vital part of any community, in the days when horses played crucial roles in work and play. But saddlers did more than sell riding saddles. These unsung heroes worked with all manner of leather goods, including repairing blacksmiths’ bellows, hat boxes or even suitcases and bags for a society heavily dependent on the material.
Our workshop contains all equipment from former Helmsley saddler Mr Ward. The elegant pattern books on display show the variety of saddles which Mr Ward would have bought in ready made, leaving him more time for the everyday grind of repair work.
